I have been obliged to accept the view that it is necessary to grant extra assistance in the office of the Imports and Exports Department in the shape of an assistant to Mr. Taylor. After careful enquiries I have found it to be impossible to supply this from the staff of the Government Analyst's Department. activities of this Department also are increasing rapidly and may be expected to increase even more in the immediate future owing partly to the introduction of up to date legislation for the control of food and drugs and partly to the increase of commercial work such as the assay of ores. Moreover the post is one which requires special qualifications and experience and cannot easily be taken over at short notice by an officer accustomed only to laboratory work. Mr. Taylor joined the service in 1913 and is now forty-eight years of age. He is due for leave in 1938 and it is understood that he contemplates comparatively early retirement. Unless, therefore, arrangements can be made to train a successor in the somewhat peculiar duties of the post the problem of his replacement is likely to present considerable difficulty.
